Program History and Budget

The program began funding research projects in Fiscal Year (FY) 1993 (see table). The founding Program Managers were Clive D. Jorgensen, Ph.D., and Jerry W. Elwood, Ph.D. Since 2001 Jeffrey S. Amthor, Ph.D., has been the Program Manager.

The program established a Chief Scientist position in 2004. That position was held by Paul J. Hanson, Ph.D. through 2009.

Since it was established, the program has contributed to the federal interagency U.S. Global Change Research Program and the federal interagency U.S. Climate Change Science Program. The program participated in the Interagency Program on Terrestrial Ecology and Global Change (TECO) for TECO's entire tenure (i.e., the FY 1995 through FY 1998 funding selection cycles).

BER Budget Requests to Congress

The Program for Ecosystem Research was part of the Ecological Processes (FY 2001 to FY 2006) and the Climate Change Response (FY 2007 to FY 2009) subprograms included in the BER budget requests to Congress.
